If you have been in a car accident, or even hurt in another way at the hands of someone else, you know all too well that a big concern is your unpaid medical bills. A simple emergency room visit at the hospital can set you back several thousand dollars. If your treatment continues, your bills increase. These incurred medical bills are in addition to the other expenses you are incurring – a rental car, time off work, etc. A car crash can be a scary time for you and your family. You do not need the added stressors of trying to figure out who will pay your medical bills and worrying about outstanding bills going to collections. I recommend to my clients, if you have health insurance, have you health insurance pay your bills. If you also have MedPay (medical payments coverage) through your auto insurer, you may think that is who should pay your bills. But there can be delays with MedPay and sometimes there simply isn’t enough money. To protect yourself and ensure that your credit isn’t affected, it is best to have your bills paid by your health insurance. Also, do not assume that the other insurance company will simply roll over and pay your medical bills. That is not how it works. Most often, the insurance company will simply pay you a lump sum at some point and expect you to pay your medical bills on your own. This can take a long time to happen. Speak with your Missouri or Illinois injury attorney, if you have been in a car crash, and discuss with him/her as to the best way to handle your medical bills.
